The Hungarian Skeptic Society (Hungarian name: Szkeptikus Társaság Egyesület) was founded in Budapest on December 15, 2006, with 19 participants to act as a background organization for a growing movement of skepticism. This was much needed partly because of the decline of the prestige of science and science education after the great political changes in the country. As pseudosciences, superstitions and esoteric nonsense started spreading in an ever-increasing rate, grass-roots activism and scholarly investigations needed to be synchronized to tackle the problem. The organization now has around 100 members, many of whom are working along projects on a daily basis.
